jimbobHiya all, does anyone know if I'm ok to put 80w/90 API GL4 gear oil in my P200?

oli85hi adrian, wow sounds like your all over it to be fair, ive never done anything like this before, im not too bad with the basics on a car engine....so hoping there fairly similar.
putting a new engine into a classic frame was an idea i had, just to add a bit of reliability to it.
Have you had much to do with the vespa T5's?
Would you say the amount you spent would be average in a re-build?

What tips do you have to save money during the process? or not such a great idea??
Thanks for the reply buddy

I would have done my rebuild a lot, lot cheaper!

I brought the scoot completely siezed with very few main re-usable parts and spent two and a half years practically making a brand new machine.
I carried out all of the engine strip and rebuild which took three weeks to scrape burnt-on cow dung off the casing and cylinder fins only to replace the head and have the casing 'soda' blasted?
All I can say is really plan it out to avoid mistakes like that.
If yoo know your way around a car, then the basic moving parts (of which there are few) of a two-stroke shouldn't be a problem.
I can fit a bathroom but have never stripped an engine and my scoot sounds alright and hasn't blown up yet.
Take your time and get to know a good shop. I travelled initially from the Midlands to Buzzsolomotto in Halifax, used a shot blaster in Wolverhampton and an amazing paint-spr... less

adrianHi again; think my mesage got cut-off.
About the paint job; this is the icing on the cake and the whole 'essence' of a scoot I think. I wouldn't go 'powder coating' on wheels or anywhere you want a 'show stopper' (in my humble opinion).

Bolts on wheels can work loose as coating 'sinks' and I am so glad I went two-pac with laquer finish - she looks amazing and has been commented on in Lambretta Club mag!
i spent three months sand blasting, filling, sanding and priming my scooter body for Arnold Fairings (Wordsley nr Dudley - absolutely brilliant, award winning bike sprayer) to tell me it was s..t and did I want a 'concorse' finish? I did - they re-blasted, un-filed, panel beat and, some weeks and a bargain £800 later, gave me a finish that made me weep with joy when I collected it!
Oh,. and ALWAYS do a 'dry-build' before painting!! Cheers - Adey less

adrianHi Oli.
Just completed a 1965 series 3 complete strip and rebuild so speaking from experience, you can't go wrong with a series 2 or 3 Lambretta as there are so many good companies out there who can provide parts, service and advice.
if I could do it all again; what would I change?

Prices of genuine Italian bikes seem to be creeping up as restoration projects are getting harder to find (they did not make an unlimited number of these, after all). I brought mine three years ago for £950 with a totally siezed engine and a rusty frame with bits missing.
She has had a total nut-and-bolt rebuild with new crank, piston, head, electric kit and £1000 paint-job. Total build price as she stands today including original purchase, about six grand!
I could have brought a totally prepared bike for about 4 grand but it wouldn't be my vision but someone else... less

Hi Dorset T5.
Sounds good; I've got a 1965 Li125 Special that might look good with a screen. How much are you looking for mate?
Thanks.
Adrian.

The colours were on a colour chart, some of them are called RAL colours which are a kind of standard colour set. Spray paint suppliers have sets of chips in different colour so you can hold them next to the Scoot and pick your choice. They can also mix colours to your choice. I had the spray paint for my bodywork mixed from a formulation for Ford Grabber blue which was the closest colour I could see to the blue on Team Sky bikes which Bradley Wiggins rode on his Tour de France victory. You can get any colour mixed once you have a code from a manufacturer and there are web sites dedicated to car colours. I think there is also a web site for original Lammy and Vespa colours. less

We've booked a few nights in Venice to start then we're coming across to lucca and livorno but getting digs when we get there then working our way all down the coast to amalfi and positano. If anybody has any addresses or phone numbers for decent b and b or hotels, I'd be ever so grateful, cheers Jim.
